Here at Hillside, we learn Spanish...
Aqui en Hillside, apprendemos el español...
At Hillside, we intend for children to know more, remember more and understand more in a Modern Foreign Language, which we have chosen as Spanish, so that they leave primary school with the basic fundamentals in Spanish to build on in high school. We are committed to early language learning and believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster and more effectively the language in question is acquired. We therefore believe that by introducing a new language to children when they are at primary school, they tend to be less self‐conscious about speaking aloud at this stage of their development. It is widely believed that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates lifelong language learning.
We believe that learning a foreign language helps all pupils develop their interests and curiosity in the similarities and differences between themselves and others. This includes learning about countries, cultures, people and communities. Learning a foreign language helps pupils to extend their communication skills and enhances self‐esteem.
Our Spanish Curriculum enables pupils to build conversational Spanish which they can apply in future life situations which they may come across. As a result, MFL allows our pupils to access more opportunities in the world.
Our curriculum has clear progression and builds and reflects on prior knowledge. It is our intention that MFL skills are linked across the year groups to embed previous learning which will allow greater opportunity for children to become life-long language learners.
